Great Perfect Thanks - Mint

Mint
So I started using Mint.com and it is AWESOME. I don't really have any spending problems in life, but it's nice to see, in chart form, where it all goes.

I'm a bit saddened by the categories, though, since it's missing two that basically all my money goes to:

1) Booze
2) Un-reimbursed employee expenses

Does anyone know how to add a category? Is it possoible? I'm using "amusements" for booze, which is nifty, but the onlyr eal one for unreimbursed employee expenses is "car rental and taxi" which mixes up with my zipcar costs.

Still, though, it's so awesome. I got all my accounts into it in like 4 minutes. I can't recommend it strongly enough. Thanks to Justin for the tip.

I used to keep track of my personal expenses using Quicken. It was always simultaneously satisfying and soulcrushing as I went receipt by recipt logging in where (and how fast!) my money went. I wonder if this system is all that much better. I barely spend any money these days but I think I'll try it out anyhow.

Thanks for the tip!

Wow, the direct sync to bank accounts is great! No need to enter pesky recipts at all! The only thing which is a pain is sorting through some of the categorizing stuff. But I think that'll get smoother as time goes on.

Yeah, it took me like 30 mins to re-categorize a bunch of merchants, and then it was awesome.

cool....we were looking for something like this. maybe i'll try it out. although your two extra categories are ones we could certainly use too. ian more with the booze and me more with the work. sigh.

O RLY?

I really can't stand mint. Every time I buy something it puts it in the wrong category. Apparently I spend $1000+ a month on buying gas for my car. What car? And the recommended ways of saving money like switching to Verizon is really lame.

Re: O RLY?

You can permanently re-categorize all merchants. It took me like 30 minutes to get them all squared away.

I dont really get this site. maybe I'm missing something and it won't let me add one of my credit cards :(
billetdoux From: [info]billetdoux Date: April 15th, 2008 03:50 pm (UTC) (Link)
I think you have to already have an online login for your card?

nice!

Yah Mint has been a life saver for me. I have the same categories problem you do and have applied the same solution you have. "Amusement" for booze and "Business services" for job related expenses. Very excited to see how they evolve the product.

show dude

Hey-were you at Hot Chip last night? I also think I saw you at Jose Gonzalez and Caribou also.

Are you going to all three days of Coachella? I think my friend Matt and I are only going Friday and Saturday. We have Friday tickets and camping passes but still need Saturday tickets. I'm hoping we see that one chick that is pissed her boyfriend and friend ditched her and is eager to get rid of the tickets...

I have been using this for a little while as well. It is great. I searched for Mac apps that auto-sync with credit cards/banks via OFX, and none work well (iBank 3 does it, but it's ugly and messy). Switched to Mint.com, much better.

fantastic! this is totally what i need.

oh, and for the poster above who has category problems, i noticed that my gym membership comes through on my paper invoice (and mint.com) listed as automotive. so some of the automatic categorization issues might be on the credit card processor end or the merchant itself (or which card you use).

I love Mint, but I almost never look at it since I signed up a few months ago. My issue is the time-delay -- alerts, summaries, and notifications are useless because they're always about 2 days behind.

Apparently my business partner knows these dudes. One of them runs a co-working space in Cambridge.
